Schoolmates was a nationally distributed scholastic chess magazine created by the United States Chess Federation to inspire young players and support chess education across the country. Designed specifically for students, educators, and scholastic programs, the publication combined instruction, puzzles, tournament coverage, and engaging features tailored to developing minds. During her tenure as Senior Art Director and Director of Publications, Jami Anson worked closely with the editorial and production team to design and produce 32 issues of Schoolmates.
She helped shape the magazine’s visual identity and accessibility, overseeing layout, illustration, and production while ensuring each issue was both educational and visually engaging. Through this work, Schoolmates became an important gateway for young players entering the world of competitive chess and a key component of US Chess’s commitment to scholastic outreach.
