The U.S. Chess Federation is the premier national organization for chess in the United States and the country’s primary organizer of tournaments at every level, from scholastic and regional competitions to elite national championships held annually. For many years, US Chess was headquartered in Newburgh, New York—a city closely tied to American chess history as the home of legendary coach Jack Collins, mentor to Bobby Fischer. During this period, Jami Anson was selected directly out of college to join the federation, rising to become Senior Art Director and Director of Publications. In this role, Jami led the design and production of national publications (Chess Life, US Chess Catalog, Schoolmates), books (including Sterling Publishing, Disney, Everything Book Series, NY Times Publishing, Barnes and Nobles Publishing), tournament materials (including fliers, signage, event logistics), merchandise, and the US Chess Membership, while also supporting and documenting major tournaments and iconic players through professional photography. Jami worked closely with top competitors and national events that helped define American chess during this era. In 2003, the U.S. Chess Federation made the decision to relocate its headquarters to Tennessee, marking the end of a significant chapter in its New York–based history.
