Plattekill Historical Society & Persens House
Project type
Civil War, Persens House
Date
Through the Years
Location
Kingston, NY
The Plattekill Historical Society proudly partners each year with the Persen House, a landmark deeply rooted in the region’s rich Civil War history, to honor and preserve the stories of those who shaped the area during one of the nation’s most defining periods. Together, these historic buildings serve as vital centers for education, remembrance, and community engagement, connecting modern audiences with the lived experiences of the past. A cornerstone of this effort is the remarkable work of Shirley V. Anson, who dedicated more than 15 years to researching and writing a comprehensive book on local Civil War history. Her work documents 484 local soldiers and includes an extraordinary collection of 384 photographs, bringing personal faces and stories to the historical record. Her family is currently working to complete her final chapter, with plans to publish the book by the end of 2026, ensuring her legacy endures. The Civil War Round Table in Kingston also plays an integral role in supporting and advancing Civil War history in the region, fostering scholarship, dialogue, and public interest that strengthens the mission of both the Plattekill Historical Society and the Persen House.
